As much as I use to love coming to this location for Visible Changes, it seems that this pleasure has come to an end with the staffing change.
I would like to point out that I am African American, thus I have textured hair that tends to curl and sometimes get tangled. Prior to the event that happened yesterday (10-21-17), I would come here to get my hair straightened. My favorite stylist was a woman named Monica who was of Hispanic heritage and absolutely did a fantastic job on styling my hair, unfortunately, I believe she no longer works at this location.
Let's jump into why I gave this location such a bad review, which I hate to do but I feel must be necessary for anyone with textured hair.
I had box braids prior to setting up my appointment two weeks in advance. I had received a consultation for a style, cut, and hair dye and the staff had agreed that they could work with my hair. Keep in mind that last year I had box braids before and had walked in after I had taken them out and Monica had taken great care of me. Yes, my hair is thick, yes it was tangled, but she didn't simply let the texture of my hair scare her away.
Upon waiting for the colorist Maria to start my hair, she went through my head and made comments that my hair was tangled, matted, and she couldn't work with it. She then grabbed the stylist named Shaun who then implied that my hair had turned into dreadlocks from keeping my braids in too long and that I should google/find a place on Lamar street to detangle/style my hair because it was unworkable for them. The texture was too much, and color wouldn't sit well with my hair. I simply left in a proper manner without arguing, but this was the first time in my life that I left a hair salon COMPLETELY distressed.
Now, I asked a few friends if they thought my hair was matted and unworkable, and they questioned why I asked. They all made comments saying "yes your hair is tangled a little but I can still run my fingers through it. Plus, if you just brush it or comb it, your hair is fine".
Not to mention the past few times I've been to the salon and the hair stylists simply detangle my hair. I was prepared to pay the price to get my hair dyed, styled, and cut like any other customer but was turned away because of my hair texture.
Maybe they were overbooked for the day, maybe the work stress was getting to the staff, but I didn't appreciate the comments that were given to me when I was there and when they quickly rushed to cancel my appointment entirely. All I received from this was that they simply did not desire to put in the work even though I was prepared to pay any price. I have prior before/after photos from when I would have my hair styled at this location, but with this staff changed I wouldn't recommend anyone to venture here.
If you can not work on highly textured hair, don't advertise it. If African American hair can not be worked on in your salon, simply state it. I've always given positive feedback in the past and hate to leave such a negative review, but I feel it is necessary for anyone who has textured hair so they don't run into this problem how I have.
