Okay, so let me start off by saying I don’t normally go to Great Clips to get my hair cut. I only do when I’m short on time or there are no other options. For the most part, they have decent customer service and friendly staff but the haircuts they give are awful. My rating, which is a generous 1 star, takes everything into consideration (customer service, friendliness of staff, wait time, atmosphere, and most importantly, the quality of service). I want to make sure you, the reader of this and potential customer, know that if I could rate this business and my experiences in it any lower than 1 star, I would. I generally keep my haircuts simple - a fade halfway up (something that sits a little above the ears), blend the upper portions of the sides and back, and lightly thin out the top. I have gone to other stylists/barbers not associated with Great Clips and have gotten this type of haircut without any problems, so I don’t understand why Great Clips cannot (1) comprehend my instructions, (2) give good haircuts. After my first bad haircut, a haircut so bad that I told myself I would never go back, I gave Great Clips another chance; this time in another city. After a late arrival, I was short on time and wanted a “fresh fade” before continuing my day. I checked into the nearest salon my GPS could find and went straight there. While parking my vehicle outside the somewhat dilapidated building, my mind began to replay my past experiences and I began to question what I was even doing there. I soon realized I was just wasting time thinking about what could happen and figured I better go in. Once again, the staff was friendly and welcomed me with a smile, but I was not to be fooled. I sat down in their crusty chair and told the stylist how my usual barber cuts my hair. She seemed to understand but then proceeded to give me the highest fade I’ve ever seen (remember, I prefer a low fade, something that sits a little above the ears). After she buzzed the sides, I figured I could ask her to blend the sides to make my haircut appear more attractive and not so disappointing. To my expectation, she made it worse. She blended the sides in a way that makes the top of my head look like a triangle. I look ridiculous, but it’s too late to correct so I politely smile and tell her to thin the rest. She begins shorting the length of my hair to get it “ready for thinning”. I question this and tell her to NOT take any length of the top. She tells me that she’s “making it even”. I go ahead with it. After she “makes it even” (shortens the length), she thins it, and brings me up to the front. I pay, politely thank her, offer her a tip for her subpar haircut, and leave. This will definitely be my last time going here as Great Clips continues to disappoint.
Also, I’ve you’ve never been to Des Moines or are currently living here and want to try new places for lunch, I highly recommend Potbelly Sandwich Shop off Mills Civic Pkwy. It’s amazing.
