After thinking about getting a tapered cut for months, I decided to go in for a hair cut on December 27, 2017. I had pictures that showed different angles of the hair cut to make the stylists' job easier. When I walked in, Ruby was sitting at the front and she did not greet me and my mom. We approached the counter and said hello. She responded back with little to no enthusiasm. My mom asked if there was someone present who was comfortable cutting ethnic hair. Ruby said yes. We then asked who would be doing my hair and she said that she would. Normally, I would have walked out due to her attitude (probably not good to let someone with a bad attitude cut your hair) but I thought she may have been going through something and that she would not let that affect her work.
When I sat down in the chair, I explained to her what I wanted. My hair was blown out and she looked at it. She told me that I should go to the shampoo bowl. MISTAKE #1: Do not let Ruby cut your hair wet. This allows her to hide her mistakes or neglect. She shampooed my hair and conditioned it. It felt dry after the conditioning treatment which I find to be odd since a knowledgeable hair stylist should know to use a moisturizing conditioner on my hair. Ruby gave me a towel to dry my hair and it stunk so bad. MISTAKE #2: Please do not leave the laundry load in the washing machine too long. The towels/clothing will sour and should be washed again. Nevertheless, I proceeded to the chair. Ruby began to tell me how "kinky coily" my hair was (as if I did not know) and tried to detangle it with a fine tooth comb. I would use my shirt to wipe the water pouring down from my face because the towel smelled so bad and Ruby actually scolded me by saying "Girl, I know how water your hair holds. That's why I have you a towel". MISTAKE #3: Do not refer to clients as 'girl' or make comments like 'your hair'. I am not a girl but a grown woman and you clearly know little to nothing about my hair given the butcher job you did to it. MISTAKE #4: Please provide your stylists with the proper tools to service ALL TYPES of clients so that my hair does not break during the detangling process. As a licensed stylist, Ruby should know that my hair must be detangling with product and a wide toothed comb. Ruby did attempt to find one by looking at one other stylist's station but did not find one. This suggests that either she did not care to find one or that there is not one at this location. You choose.
Ruby told me her plan and began to cut my hair using clippers even though I said that I did not want the sides or back shaved. This was about the only instruction that she followed. After what turned out to be random cuts to my hair, she said that she was finished. I brought my own products to put in my hair and tried to style my hair. I did not go over very well so I paid and left. When I got home and tried to style it, all attempts resulted in a flat-top. I decided to blow my hair out and realized that there was no evenness. There was actually a two-inch jump from the back of my hair to the middle with no graduating length as is required for a tapered cut.
I had to pay a professional to cut my hair. This means that I spent money twice. Ruby's attitude, lack of professionalism, and horrible hair cutting skills have led me to contact the corporate office to file a formal complaint.
I warn all people with any type of texture in your hair to steer away from Ruby. She is not yet skilled enough to do even a decent job on anyone's hair. You will join me on the long journey to growing your hair back out. I sincerely hope that the $23 was worth it. I will complain to whoever will listen until I receive resolve in this situation.
